The world of technology has opened new outlets for learning not previously available in the past. YouTube furthers this technological sea of information, placing it into the palm of the hand.

Bill Le, a senior studying Computer Science, used YouTube to teach himself the sport of volleyball.

He has played volleyball for seven years. His fascination started during the sophomore year of his high school career. He has used YouTube as an outlet to clarify the information given to him by his high school coach and to fill the gaps in his knowledge.

Le investigated new techniques for serving, passing, and setting. He then practiced in his own room to gain better ball control. He used both tutorials and game footage of Olympic athletes to study the game further.

Once the hard work was over, he was able to implement what he learned into his game. His research and hard work paid off.

In last year’s 2014 season he was awarded Skyline Conference Player of the Week, as well as NJCU Athlete of the Week for April 7th, 2014.

When Le started his college career at NJCU, was not originally recruited to play volleyball. Le had to try out for the team and through his hard work made it.

He explained that through his years of volleyball the sport has taught him a lot of different things.

“I’ve learned discipline, respect, teamwork, how to work hard for what you strive for, and how to have a good work ethic,” Le said.

“(Playing volleyball) has made me better-rounded person.  I’ve become athletic, learned how to analyze situations quickly and make quick decisions,” Le said.

He believes these skills will help him in his future as he pursues a career as a programmer or software engineer.

What started on YouTube with informative videos has blossomed into a successful volleyball career at the collegiate level that has given Le the tools to be successful in the future.
