Looking for Child Care? NJCU Has Your Back

Ana M. Acosta

NJCU is a very diverse university with students from all different backgrounds and ages; many of the students who attend NJCU are parents. One of the main concerns for parents who either work or go to school here is finding a trusted child caring facility. Most do not know that a trusted place is right on campus.

In order to cater to its diverse students, NJCU has created the Children’s Learning Center (CLC) to ease their college careers. The center was open in 1983, and it provides affordable services to students, alumni, and staff.

The Children’s Learning Center has professional, well trained (all the members of the main staff are certified teachers), and experienced staff members such as the director Keri Giordano and full-time teacher Jennifer Arroyo who have been part of CLC since 2003. The center functions not only as a child care center, but also as a learning place for the children who attend.

Children who are part of the center follow the Reggio Emilia Approach, an educational method that bases the learning curriculum on the children’s interests.

Arroyo says, “The great thing about us is that we work around the children’s interests, if they’re interested in the seasons we incorporate that into our teaching.”

They also organize events such as fund-raisers, class trips, and parent’s meetings. Since it functions like a pre-school, the process of enrolling is similar. Parents who wish to enroll their children have to submit an application with a $25 fee, as well as medical and immunization records.

CLC is located Hepburn Hall room 101 and is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. It offers flexible schedules, meaning that the children do not have to attend all five days to be admitted. Students’ fee is $3/per hour while alumni and staff’s fee is $5/per hour.
